Random Rambles: Does the Universe Exist?

Here's a weird idea. What if everything we know to be true is false? What if our brilliant scientific discoveries never even came close to the truth? What if we are really pawns in the grand scheme of things that can be easily manipulated? For that matter, what if our universe is just one giant chess game or puppet show? Will the truth ever be revealed to us?

Being as agnostic as I am, I tend to be cynical about many proven facts. Science is a fickle thing that is variable and constantly changing. With all these laws and theories being thrown around, it feels as though we've made great progress into discovering more about our universe. We've come a long way since the Scientific Revolution and the amount of new discoveries is mind-boggling as every new invention allows us to know much more. The agnostic view is diminishing as new discoveries prove even knowledgeable scientists wrong. The Higgs-Boson particle is a great example as many scientists like Stephen Hawking believed that humans would never find it in its physical manifestation. Scientists are slowly cracking the mystery and the process of finding out more about our universe will be expedited with more and more people entering the realm of science.

But what if this is just a red herring? Our world may be no more than an illusion. A fabrication that someone or something made. This is the popular deistic view in which God or some other being created the world but has no part in it. What we may not realize is that the fabrication made by this deity may be no more than a fated existence or a controlled experiment. Even though it may not seem like it, the deity may have us as puppets to carry out a pitiful existence filled with wonder. Or maybe the deity is just toying with us. What if the universe is just a simple world filled with made-up mechanics? What if there's a huge world out there beyond our universe? It's unsettling to think about what may be beyond our universe because maybe it's infinitely larger than our already gigantic universe. The creator of our universe may just have millions of universes just like ours to play with as well. We may be trapped in this world while trying desperately to solve its mysteries while the creator is just laughing at us.

But let's assume there is no deity or creator. Our universe's origins are sketchy enough to warrant more research to find out what is going on. We hardly know anything about life's origins either which makes our existence in this world very fragile. All the laws in the universe could be not legitimate since we hardly know anything outside of earth. So what does this all mean? I tend to think that mathematics is a language, something we apply to the universe. But our universe is variable, right? Our concept of the fourth dimension, time, is limited but we know time is variable and can't be defined with math. If our laws don't work for the rest of the universe, does the universe as we think of it exist? Even if everything we have theorized about is true, we still have barely scratched the surface of learning about the universe. So what now? Will our existence on earth be meaningless since our species will eventually die out? Will all our attempts at scientific progress be fruitless?

In a world of infinite possibilities with each theory as legitimate as another, it is impossible to be certain about anything. We are pawns in the universe and we know nothing yet we like to think we're getting somewhere. Having thoughts like imagining the world is just a dream or a staged illusion from other species while we lie anesthetized to be booted into this world is radical and unbelievable. Religions attempt to explain the universe and how everything works yet they are merely theories in the end. If we abandon our logical and rational mindset, will we find the truth about the universe or stray further from it by making nonsensical assumptions? And even if we cover most of the probable possibilities, will the truth be even more complex? We may never know why the universe exists yet we do know we have a limited time on this world. We can hypothesize all we want but in the end does it really matter? The question now is what to do now.
